Preventing Emergencies
One of the first maintenance lessons I learned long ago was: Keep the wheel bearings greased. And no one ever applauded because the wheel never fell off.
An excellent example is the old traveling circus. It was a complex logistical operation.
They’d roll into town on railroad cars, unload everything, put up the tents, assemble the equipment, put on The Greatest Show on Earth, take it all down, load it back up and move on to the next town.
Then do it all over again.
And while everybody was watching the show… somebody was backstage keeping the wheels greased.
Literally and figuratively.
Inspecting things.
Repairing things.
Maintaining things.
Getting everything ready for the next move and the next show.
No one bought a ticket to see that.
No one ever sat in the audience and said, “Wow. That bearing appears to be exceptionally well lubricated.”
You Don’t Notice Maintenance When It’s Working.
You Only Notice It When Everything Stops.
That’s true in almost every business.
No one celebrates because the equipment runs each day.
No one sends flowers because the database was backed up.
No one says congratulations when the maintenance follow-up happened as scheduled.
No one gives you a standing ovation because the equipment was serviced before it broke.
Managers are especially vulnerable to this. When something fails, it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the building.
Something breaks and everybody jumps into action. We solve the problem and, once again, save the day. High fives all around, and we all feel productive.
Meanwhile, the person quietly preventing 50 potential emergencies doesn’t look nearly as heroic.
That Is Backwards Thinking, At Best.
The only acceptable emergency is the one that never happens. That’s what keeping the wheel bearings greased is all about.
It’s taking care of the boring details while they’re still boring. Because once they become exciting…
It’s Often Too Late.
If people are applauding the repairs, it is because THE WHEEL HAS ALREADY FALLEN OFF.
JADCO Wear Resistant Steel Products Are Like That.
The applause never comes when our wear resistant steel products work as planned, because everyone is focused on dealing with the next dramatic failure.
Here’s A Perfect Example Of How One Customer Increased Production Just By Changing Their Wear Plate To JADCO QT-PLUS ®.

After they installed JADCO QT-PLUS ® in the diverter chute, all was quiet. Recently, the customer called saying, “Remember the diverter chute we replaced two or three years ago? It finally wore through, so send me an updated quote.”
Looking At Their Purchase Records, They Installed It SEVEN Years Ago.
When you had to repair a problem that often, it’s easy to forget you no longer have to constantly fix it.
This gives you time to focus on your other day-to-day emergencies.
We did not expect applause for their extended wear life. Our reward is a customer for life.
What Improvements Can We Create For You By Resolving Your Major Wear Headaches?
- Which application will make your life easier?
- How will this result improve your processes?
- Why is it important to you?
JADCO’s QT-PLUS ® delivers greater performance IN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING WEAR APPLICATIONS than the various AR400 steel plates you have used previously.
Creating wear resistant steel with the same hardness through the entire thickness demands accurately controlled alloying chemistry and precise heat treating.
Doesn’t Every Steel Company Make Their Wear Plate Last As Long As JADCO QT-PLUS®?
The quick answer is No, although the attention to alloy content required at the steel mill is available to anyone. Yet most wear plate distributors choose to reduce the proper quantities and percentages of these essential alloying elements to get a lower selling price.
When you cut back on these critical alloys, wear life drops, and it is always the customer who suffers.
For the last 46+ years, JADCO has focused exclusively on delivering consistent, longer equipment life for our customers.
We are able to deliver better results to our customers because we think differently. How? By strictly focusing on improving your current results.
