CCO HARDNESS

How Hard Is Your Chromium Carbide Overlay (CCO) Steel?

JADCO • Rich F.2025-06-09T17:14:54-04:00

The hardness value for your wear resistant steel depends on which measurement scale is used.

While there are a number of different hardness comparisons for various materials, here are the most common hardness scales used for wear resistant steel:

  • BRINELL (HB)
  • ROCKWELL C (HRC)
  • VICKERS (HV)
Steel Hardness Comparison Chart
The Rockwell C scale, is often the most well known scale used for hard steels. While nearly all the heat-treated alloy steels are measured in Brinell (HB) hardness, you can see in this comparison it doesn’t allow for accurate comparison with the various carbides used in overlay products. The Vickers (HV) scale is used for these carbide containing deposits.
Chromium Carbide

Cr Carbide = 1350HV

Chromium Carbide is the most common weld overlay used for abrasion resistance applications. Chrome Carbides are used to make our industry leading CHROMEWELD ™ 600 plate. As shown in the above photomicrograph, the primary Chrome carbides form into splinter shapes.

Nb Carbide

Nb Carbide = 2000HV

Niobium Carbides are round in shape and smaller in size. Niobium Carbides are harder than Chrome Carbides, which is why JADCO uses them to make our CHROMEWELD ™ Nb-PLUS plate. This combination delivers a more abrasion resistant overlay than traditional chrome carbide plates. The Niobium Carbides in the above photo are shown by the yellow arrows. The blue arrows point out the Chrome Carbides.

V Carbide

V Carbide = 2900HV

Vanadium Carbides are used along with Chrome Carbides and Niobium Carbides, to make our CHROMEWELD ™ Complex plate. This combination gives you a complex carbide wear plate, with remarkable hardness and toughness to combat your most challenging wear applications. Great for high heat and abrasion issues, CHROMEWELD ™ Complex is frequently used in steel mill applications.

W Carbide

W Carbide = 2600HV

Tungsten Carbides are uniformly spread throughout the Chrome Carbide deposit along with CHROMEWELD ™ W. This carbide overlay plate was designed to withstand your most severe abrasion challenges. Unlike other clad plate vendors who only have their Tungsten Carbides laying on top of the weld bead, JADCO has perfected the ability to distribute these carbides from the top of the weld to the bottom. This is difficult to create, as welding when the weld temperatures are too high, doesn’t allow for Tungsten Carbide formation.

Ti Carbide

Ti Carbide = 3200HV

Titanium Carbides in CHROMEWELD ™ Ti, creates a unique overlay material ideal for applications requiring high levels of abrasion resistance, along with the ability to withstand heavy impact. Ti is a premium grade overlay wear plate, developed with an ultra-tough matrix and finely dispersed abrasion and impact resistant titanium carbides. This plate is often used in mining and aggregate production.

IS THE CCO PLATE YOU ARE USING THE ONLY CARBIDE OVERLAY OPTION FROM YOUR SUPPLIER? DON’T LIMIT YOUR PERFORMANCE BY USING DECADES OLD PRODUCT DESIGN.

As the leading manufacturer of Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) plate in the USA, you can depend on the performance results you get from JADCO. Most steel distributors buy foreign CCO which has little carbide content, and even less quality control.

Our entire CHROMEWELD ™ family of CCO products are made at our headquarters in Harmony, PA, 30 minutes North of Pittsburgh.
