Doing Business Face To Face

“These dimensions will be good enough to get you a budgetary quote. But I’m going to measure the bucket before I enter the order to make certain it fits.”

Recently, another longtime wear steel salesman called asking for dimensions on a specific model of front end loader so he could quote a bucket liner. We discussed how the available sizes vary between different models, even from the same manufacturer.

These buckets and liners are not items sitting on a shelf. Each one is produced when the manufacturer receives an order.

As a result, manufacturing variations will naturally occur.

Here Is A Perfect Example

A Midwest gravel pit operator ordered two brand new loaders from a highly respected equipment manufacturer, with identical specifications on both.

To protect his investment, he wanted to install a 3/8” QT-PLUS ® liner inside each loader bucket before it started to wear. This way the fit would be perfect.

Here you can see one of the two new loader buckets. The owner ordered two identical loaders and wisely planned to install bucket wear liners before they showed significant wear.

His instructions were, “Measure up one bucket and send me two liners.”

Mining and aggregate heavy equipment is subjected to constant abuse and stress over the years. After several years of use, a bucket may not have the same measurements it had when it first left the factory. This means an OEM replacement part may not fit the way it did originally.

Rather than assume these two new buckets were identical, I measured each of them.

SURPRISINGLY, THE TWO NEW BUCKETS WERE NOT THE SAME SIZE!

The bucket bottom straight is measured from the back of the base edge to the point where the bucket starts to curve up the back. This is the tangent.

The first unit measured 34”.
The second unit measured 38.5”!

One bottom straight was 4.5” LONGER than the other! Remember, these were identical machines, ordered and delivered at the same time.

Had we measured just one bucket and delivered two matching wear liners, he would have received one liner that was either too short or too long. He might have thought we didn’t measure correctly, when it was actually the equipment that was different. Everyone involved was surprised.

BY TAKING THE TIME TO VERIFY THE DIMENSIONS OF EACH BUCKET, THE JADCO LINERS FIT EACH MACHINE PERFECTLY.
