When we don’t know where to go next, many people simply stop and don’t move. We figure that if we stop moving, we won’t be subject to surprises and pain lurking in the future. Belief is better than uncertainty, so we stop making any decision to avoid the pain from the unknown.

We are conditioned early on to avoid pain. Since we want to avoid what lies ahead, we also choose not to stay where we are. So we simply turn back to what we have always done and focus on something else, ignoring the problem until we are forced to deal with it the next time. The very definition of procrastination.

We know we’re not in the right place, but we don’t know where to turn next, so we ask the nearest person for help. The problem here is, this person might be just as lost as we are! Worse yet, their advice might take us further away from where we should be heading. People who have been asked will always volunteer an answer; even if they do not have the insight to provide the right answer.

When we are lost, we simply need to find someone who has the knowledge or a map, so we can follow their instructions to get to where we need to go. Have we checked into who the person is or what they actually know? Instead, we trust their passion and great sounding advice. We tune out our gut instincts and buy into the idea this map will take us where we need to go.

We’ve all been burned too many times into following the ‘yellow-brick-road’ proposed by others, driven only by their own self interests.

Did they get you further down the path? More often than not, on arrival the destination looked nothing like the picture on the map.

Beware of a salesperson offering a shortcut to your destination, based only on an opinion on how to get you there.
