Avoid These 3 Mistakes Installing Chrome Carbide Wear Plate

Since its introduction in the 1960’s, Chrome Carbide Overlay Wear Plate is often your best choice to combat Abrasive wear applications. The Chrome Carbide Overlay industry often uses the term CCO, to describe clad wear plate.

CCO is made by machine welding hardfacing onto a base plate. The most common base plate is mild steel, although it is also applied to stainless steel for corrosion applications.

JADCO CLAD

JADCO MFG INC., makes our own Chrome Carbide Overlay plate at our factory in Harmony, PA. We are the largest producer of CCO plate in the Western Hemisphere.

Have you ever had difficulty using CCO wear plate?

Most issues are due to three common installation errors.

Most CCO wear plate applications are welded into place. Here are the two types of welds used:

1. Joining Welds

Join the CCO plate to the equipment structural steel. Joining welds are designed to secure the wear plate in place to the equipment. They are not as hard as the Chrome Carbide wear surface. Abrasion can rapidly wear away the joining weld deposit.

2. Hardfacing Welds – do not join anything. The only purpose for a hardfacing weld is to cover or ‘Cap’ the joining weld. This protects the weld from wear, the same way as a hat protects your head from the rain.

Regardless if you are stick welding or wire feed welding, the procedure to install CCO plate is the same.

Here Are The Three Common Installation Errors, And How To Prevent Them.

Cause of Wear Steel Failure

This photo shows two main causes of CCO wear plate failure.

Mistake # 1:

The RED ‘A’ shows the joining weld has worn away. This failure resulted from not hardfacing over the joining welds.

This is the primary cause for most CCO failures. It is important to understand that any joining welds are NOT AS HARD AS THE OVERLAY. This means the weld joint does not have the same abrasion resistance as the CCO deposit.

Mistake # 2:

Not hardfacing or capping the structural welds retaining the overlay plate. The YELLOW ‘B’ shows what happens when the edge of the CCO plate is exposed to abrasive elements.

The mild steel backing plate is not hardened and will wear away quickly.

Without the base plate for support, the Chrome Carbide surface falls away; leaving no abrasion protection. This results in premature failure and unplanned downtime.

FOR A SUCCESSFUL CCO INSTALLATION:

Apply a hardfacing cover to all joining welds. This will protect the joining weld deposits from wear, keeping your wear plates securely in position.

Never allow the edge of CCO to be exposed to abrasive elements. The mild steel backing plate of the CCO deposit is not hard and wears away rapidly.

The Only Purpose For Chrome Carbide Overlay Is Wear Resistance. The overlay by itself has no structural integrity. When the softer mild steel base plate is worn away, there is nothing to support the overlay.

Just like a violent flood causes a riverbank to fail; the carbide surface will break out without the base plate support. This leaves you with zero protection, resulting in another premature failure and more unplanned downtime.

YOU MUST DO THESE STEPS For A Successful CCO Installation:

Also critical with capping the weld joints, ALL exposed CCO plate edges MUST also be covered with a compatible hardfacing alloy. Preferably use the same deposit as the overlay; being certain to cover all edges of the CCO wear plate.

Mistake # 3:

Not Fully Supporting The CCO Plate. It is important to remember the overlay itself has no structural strength.

If you are installing a ¾” overall thickness CCO plate, this means the mild steel base plate, is 3/8” thick with another 3/8” of CCO deposit. As a result any CCO plate cannot withstand being supported only on widely spaced support beams. Any flexing will result in failure of the mild steel base plate, leading to failure of the overlay seen as ‘chunking out’.

Wear Plate Chunk

This piece of CCO was not adequately supported, allowing a large chunk to break away from the plate.

For A Successful CCO Installation DO THIS:

Every CCO plate must be fully supported underneath. The best prevention against flexing is to secure the plate using the proper number of plug welds.

Weld Plugs
Starting from the center of the plate, fill the plug weld holes to secure the wear plate in an expanding outward circle.

Allow no distance greater than 18” between plug welds or plate edges.

Plug Holes

Use this chart to determine the proper size of your plug weld holes, based on the CCO thickness plate you are installing.

NOTE: Only after welding every plug weld hole, do you begin to weld the edges of the wear plate. And remember to cap all the plug welds with hardsurfacing so they do not wear away, leading to failure.

Cause of Plate Failure
These plug weld holes were not capped, allowing the joining welds to wear away. This allowed the welds retaining the CCO plate to flex until it failed. This unplanned breakdown shortly after installation, required extensive repairs.

JADCO Mfg., wants your investment in the finest wear resistant CCO material to last as long as possible. This is why it is important for you and your contractor to know exactly how to install these plates.

Don’t assume your contractor already has experience installing CCO wear plate.
