This was recently revealed when we were contacted by our customer, a reputable fabricator; when his underground utility customer brought in a screen plant for repairs.

Two years ago, this specific customer had made it through one season using AR450. When he upgraded his crusher for greater production, he hadn’t improved his screen plant performance at the same time.
The end result produced more wear than his generic AR450 could handle with several months production remaining. Shutting down for repairs with only a few weeks left in the season was out of the question.
Last year he tried a standard Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) plate that made it a few months longer than one season.
The customer secured a few more DOT aggregate contracts meaning he needed to increase his throughput. There would be no room for breakdowns from failed wear resistant steel.

Why Use Niobium Carbides With Chrome Carbides?
Carbides rarely wear out. What happens is the matrix holding the carbides wears away and the carbide simply falls out. To make it easy to understand, think of a Carbide Overlay plate like a chocolate chip cookie. The chocolate chips are the carbides, and the cookie is the matrix.
The more chocolate chips, the better the cookie tastes. The more carbides, the longer your plate will last.
When you dunk the chocolate chip cookie into milk, the cookie (matrix) goes away and the chocolate chips fall to the bottom of the cup. Abrasion works the same way on most carbide plates.
This is how you can double your wear plate life in high stress abrasion applications.
