Looking For Thin Chrome Carbide Overlay Plate?
JADCO • Rich F.2025-03-24T14:38:58-04:00When researching Chrome Carbide Overlay plates, something you seldom see available are thinner wear plate thickness.
Unlike Most CCO Manufacturers, JADCO Makes All Of Our CHROMEWELD ™ Chrome Carbide Overlay Plates In House.
This includes clad plates in light gauge thickness. We are able to make these thin plates by using stringer beads to control the weld dilution better and not burn through the thin base metal.
We make an 1/8” on 1/8” plate, for a ¼” overall thickness. We start by using a 12 gauge mild steel sheet and put down an 1/8” of Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) hard surface stringer weld bead. If you try to overly using a 1” wide oscillation, the excessive heat input will quickly burn through the base plate.
Welding a deposit one eighth of an inch wide, the welding heads are oscillating back and forth, at a tremendous speed. This is why we use stringer weld beads on the light gauge plate. It is much easier on equipment with reliable results.
On our 1/8” on 3/16”, we use a slightly smaller width oscillation, so we can run the torch faster and not burn too deeply into the plate.
While other companies may also offer a thin CCO plate, it is often only available in a 4’ x 8’ size. JADCO can make it in a 5’ x 10’ size, to deliver a better yield. Our customers tell us our CHROMEWELD ™ 600 thin plate performs better than any competitors.
What Benefits Do You Get Using Stringer Beads For Thin CCO Plate?
- A greater carbide concentration from the tight bead to bead overlap. This means you get longer life from the richer matrix, achieved by applying the welds in stringer beads.
- With the weld bead pattern so tight, it is more formable than the heavier plate sizes CCO. This allows fabrication options not available when using heavier clad plates.
- Lighter weight plates allow you to install long wearing flat back elbows, in areas where heavier standard overlay plates would be problematic. Your worst wear issues are always in the locations that are the toughest to access. Now you can finally control those applications.
- Making the plates in 5’ x 10’s lowers the cost per square foot for our customers, due to better yield than 4 x 8’s.
Your bead deposit width is only 1/8” to 3/16” maximum on stringer beads, vs. our usual one inch wide oscillations on our heavier CHROMEWELD ™ products. You are making 3 or 4 stringer bead passes, compared to one wider oscillating bead.
We could make all of our plates by the stringer bead method, but the production time and manufacturing costs would be far greater. Even though you are speeding up the weld head, it doesn’t offset how many additional passes you would have to take.
