Add Swag To Your Slag Buckets
JADCO • Rich F.2025-08-26T13:30:20-04:00Steel mills and foundries constantly handle slag, in the creation of their products. The slag is not only red hot, but extremely abrasive.
What do we mean by ‘SWAG ?’ It’s the ‘STUFF WE ALL GET’ or how about …just ‘Something Very Nice.’
Who has the perfect product to handle this Slag? That’s easy…JADCO!
Where can you talk with experts about handling Slag?
That’s also easy…The 2025 NSA Convention!
Let’s Learn More…
Our JADCO sales professionals will be on hand at the 2025 NSA Convention in Naples FL, September 15 to 18, 2025.
Here Is Why You’ll Want To Visit JADCO At The NSA Show
The wear comes from abrasion, high heat warping and cracking.
Loader buckets are typically made using one of two steel choices, when making general purpose loader buckets. They are made from either ASTM 514 which is a structural steel, or an AR400 type Abrasion Resistant steel.
Both of these choices are ‘Quench and Tempering’, heat-treated steels.
Quench, means after the steel is made and rolled to size, it is dropped into a water bath to rapidly cool down. This is how alloy steels achieve hardness.
Tempering, means after the quenched steel has cooled, the steel is reheated and held for a precise time at a specific temperature; before being allowed to cool slowly. This is how wear steels get strength without becoming brittle.
Structural steels such as ASTM 514 or T-1®, are tempered to around 900° F.
Abrasion Resistant steels such as AR400, AR500, etc., including JADCO QT-PLUS ® are tempered to around 450° F.
This Is Why Moving Slag Using Standard Buckets Creates Problems
When either of the heat treated steels are used in high-heat applications, and the steel becomes heat-soaked to a level above their Tempering temperature, the steel loses its strength and hardness. It ends up not much harder or stronger than mild steel.
When this happens, the steel will warp and often cracks due to the continual heat and cool cycles, losing its structural advantage. Losing the high hardness, means it is now more susceptible to abrasion from the slag.
The Bottom Line
Slag Buckets Frequently Need Repairs, Increasing Maintenance Costs And Downtime
This is why the JADCO Hot Slag Bucket was developed.
The difference starts by using a patented 2.5” thick monolithic floor. And our CHROMEWELD 600™ wear liner kit, for superior abrasion and heat resistance.
JADCO Slag Buckets have vertical side cutters with cast end shrouds for extra protection.
