We were standing at the drive end looking downhill toward the end of the screw. The screw was turning clockwise, pulling the material uphill. This meant it was a right hand screw.

The following information is needed to quote your screw, along with some common terms used to describe items making up a screw conveyor:

The barrel or body is usually made from standard pipe or mechanical tubing. High wear areas may have an additional protective layer, particularly where material is dropping directly on the barrel. To determine the diameter of the barrel, use two carpenter squares as shown above to act as a caliper. Make certain to clean off the surface contact areas for an accurate measurement.

Pipes and tubing come in standard sizes, making them easy to identify. This is the Inside Dimension of your flights. Using the squares, also determine the Outside Dimension of the flight.

Pitch: The distance from the side of one plate between the flights at 360° of rotation. Measure to the same side on the next plate, as shown above. Check to see if this dimension changes along the length of the screw. If it is, this is called a variable pitch; and is quite common. Count the number of pitches and the overall length of flights.

Barrel: How long is it?

Are there flanges or shafts on the end? Is there hardfacing or a wear resistant protective cover in the drop area? Photos and sketches will help to get you the most accurate price.

Flights: What is the Outside Diameter and Inside Diameter? What is the flight made from? What is the flight thickness? Is there additional hardfacing material on the flight?
