Never Weld Hardfacing Over Previous Hardfacing
JADCO • Rich F.2025-05-22T11:20:22-04:00If your wear application already has hardfacing in the major wear areas, never apply new hardfacing over the old deposit. If you do it will crack or “spall”.
WHAT IS SPALL?
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines spall as:
To break off in chips, scales, or slabs.
This occurs because hardfacing often develops micro cracks under the surface. These often fracture when welding another hard layer over the original deposit. With minimum impact, the new deposit will crack off the old hardfacing due to the micro fractures.
Always grind the surface to assure solid material in the weld area, followed by preheat. Only then can you start welding.
Always Remember To Preheat The Steels Before Welding – Except On Manganese
Maximum working temperature on Manganese steel is 450° F. DO NOT PREHEAT MANGANESE. If you exceed that temperature, it will make the steel brittle, losing the impact resistant properties.
After preparing the surfaces to be welded, all other steel varieties should be preheated to 200° F before welding.
Excellent For Buildup Or Buffer Passes
If your equipment has worn to the point it requires buildup to get back to original dimensions, FUSION™ UNIVERSAL is the perfect choice. Unlike most joining alloys where you are limited to one or two passes, UNIVERSAL allows for unlimited passes, so you can quickly replace the missing material.
Once you have the surface prepared, FUSION™ UNIVERSAL is the ideal buffer layer between your hardfacing passes. Always remove any slag before welding another pass.
Also available as a stick electrode, FUSION™ UNIVERSAL E is the answer when equipment options in the field limit your weld choices.
FUSION™ UNIVERSAL is a Modified Austenitic Stainless Steel flux cored tubular FCAW welding wire used for joining, build-up, and hardfacing. It welds great in all positions, for virtually any wear type of resistant steel.
FUSION™ UNIVERSAL welding wire has good resistance to impact, cavitation and corrosion. The 150 – 200 HB as weld deposit, it can work harden up to 47 – 50 Rc, depending on the amount of impact.
The weld deposit shows exceptionally high ductility and elongation, with exceptional crack resistance.
FUSION™ UNIVERSAL is designed for welding on a vast range of base metals and can be welded easily, making it ideal for maintenance repair welding applications. This weld wire is designed to be welded with either Ar-CO2 mixtures or straight CO2.
UNIVERSAL can be applied in an unlimited number of passes, with no surface cross checks usually seen in hardfacing. This is important when welding heat-treated wear steels. If these high strength steels such as AR400, AR500 or QT-PLUS ®, any stress checks in the weld deposit will continue into the base metal. This could cause premature failure.
FUSION™ UNIVERSAL wire is available in 33# spools, in two sizes: 0.045” and 1/16” diameters.
FUSION™ UNIVERSAL E stick electrodes are available in 10 # packages, in 5/32” and 3/16” diameters. This allows you to weld it thick and quick.
