Are You Modifying New Replacement Parts?

Visiting a papermill woodyard recently during their annual maintenance outage, the customer was planning to install their new chipper hood. Rather than the millwrights busy with the installation, they were standing and looking at the replacement hood still laying on the ground.

Annual Outages Have A Limited Time Frame To Install Replacement Parts

This is not the time to have meetings about why your new replacement parts don’t fit.

The customer was assured the new reverse engineered parts would fit as well as the original.

But now the hood doesn’t fit, and everyone is looking at everyone else, wondering what went wrong and what options they might have to make it work:

  • What Can Be Done To Make It Fit?
  • How Long Will It Take To Make Modifications?
  • Who Pays For The Necessary Rework?

Here is their replacement chipper hood. The line markings show where the opening cut out should have been, compared to how it was delivered. Needed rework caused the installation to go off schedule.

Any delay to restarting the papermill results in lost revenue of $100,000 per HOUR. The chipper hood is a critical component that cannot be bypassed in their system.
