JADCO TAKES THE CONFUSION OUT OF WEAR RESISTANT STEEL
JADCO • Rich F.2023-03-03T19:07:49-05:00When every vendor claims their wear resistant steel is through hardened and you hear conflicting data, it is not procrastination holding you back; it is confusion.Which wear steel will last the longest in your application?
You don’t need to know every detail. You simply need to know what works.
If you are confused about which wear plate to use in your most challenging application, your mind will continue to delay making a decision.
‘THROUGH HARDENED’ IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE WHY PEOPLE GET CONFUSED
Nearly every vendor claims their quenched and tempered AR Type wear plate is “Through Hardened”.
This term means the wear resistant steel has the same hardness from the top through the core of the steel.
Who Can You Trust?
Who Do You Believe?
Here Is How The Test Is Performed
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjsZVivfzcg)
Note: ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence.
Since the video has no narration, we have explained what you are seeing and why it is important. This way you can understand how Through Hardness is tested.
The ASTM test for hardness through the thickness of the steel, is called the ASTM A 255 Jominy End Quench Test.
The first step is taking a sample of wear plate and machining it into a standard size round bar. This ensures the materials are all the same size to run through the same testing procedure.
Here you can see the water contacts the bottom of the heated bar, thus quenching the steel. Quenching shocks the steel into a martensitic structure, that makes the steel hard.
This photo shows how the bottom of the test bar has cooled and is no longer orange-hot. A major key to making the steel ‘through hardened’ is the quantity of Nickel. JADCO QT-Plus has 1.00% Nickel, which is among the highest in the industry.
The Competitor’s sample referenced in the upcoming chart, contained 0.48% Nickel. While the two numbers are relatively small, the dramatically different results speak for themselves.
After the test sample has cooled to room temperature, a flat surface is ground to allow hardness testing to be done.
HERE IS A SAMPLE OF ASTM A 255 RESULTS
These are the results from an independent testing lab, showing the hardness from the ASTM A 255 test. As you can see, JADCO QT-Plus ® has the exact same hardness throughout the 2” thickness.
All of the competitor’s printed and online marketing materials claim the steel is ‘through hardened’
As you can clearly see, the hardness is quickly reduced as it gets further away from the quenched end of the sample.

Their Steel IS NOT Through Hardened, despite what they claim in their published literature.
This Explains Why You Have Experienced Some Of Your Past Wear Plates Do Well Initially, Then Suddenly Wear Out.
Allow JADCO to remove your stress and confusion when dealing with your most challenging wear application.
JADCO’s QT Plus ® delivers greater performance IN YOUR WEAR APPLICATIONS than the various AR400 steel plates you have used previously.
Being able to create wear resistant steel having the same hardness through the entire thickness of the steel, demands you accurately control the alloying chemistry with precise heat treating.
Doesn’t Every Steel Company Make Their Wear Plate Last As Long As JADCO QT Plus ®?
The quick answer is No; although the attention to detail required at the steel mill in Pennsylvania is available to anyone. Most wear plate distributors choose to reduce the proper quantities and percentages of these essential alloying elements in an effort to get a lower price. For over the last 42 years JADCO has focused exclusively on delivering consistent, longer equipment life for our customers.
Now you understand why we are able to deliver better results to our customers. We think differently by strictly focusing to improve your current results.
