High Temperature Wear Applications
JADCO • Rich F.2024-02-02T17:14:10-05:00High temperature wear applications are among the most challenging for many people to resolve.
- 1. Roll steel bloom to proper thickness, width and length, before heat treating procedure.
- 2. Heating the steel yellow hot, over 1650°F.
- 3. Quench by dunking the steel plate into a water tank. This makes it hard but brittle.
- 4. Tempering to between 400°F and 500°F, to make it withstand some degree of impact.
It Is Important To Note AR Steels Are NOT Used In Areas Where The Heat Exceeds The Tempering Range
The reason for this is when your application temperature is above 450°F, the steel will begin to Anneal or reduce the hardness of the steel.
When that happens, all of the important properties you needed from the steel are gone

Any investment you made to install wear resistant AR steel plate in an area over 500°F, you may as well have thrown $100 bills out the window.
And If Your Supplier Knew Where You Were Putting This Steel And Didn’t Tell You What Would Happen; They Either Don’t Know Their Products Or Do Not Have Your Best Interests In Mind.
At JADCO we have three (3) different CCO (Chrome Carbide Overlay) wear plates to combat wear at elevated temperatures.

For temperatures over 400°F to 1,000°F use CHROMEWELD™ 600, which is a premium grade of chromium carbide wear plate. This unique material is ideal for surfaces requiring high levels of abrasion resistance. It is produced with our proprietary CHROMEWELD™ 600 wire, hardfaced/overlayed on a mild steel base plate.
For temperatures up to 1,200°F use CHROMEWELD™ Nb PLUS, which consists of a primary chromium carbide weld deposit, compiled with niobium carbides in an austenitic matrix. CHROMEWELD™ Nb PLUS contains a greater abrasion resistant deposit at higher temperatures, compared to traditional chrome carbide plates.
For temperatures up to 1,800°F use CHROMEWELD™ COMPLEX, an overlay plate consisting of small primary chromium carbides, with the addition of Niobium and Vanadium carbides for ultra-demanding conditions. The high concentration of small carbides greatly improves wear resistance and toughness over standard chromium carbide plate, at extreme elevated temperatures.
Our entire Chromeweld family of Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) products are made at our headquarters in Harmony, PA, 30 minutes North of Pittsburgh.
As the leading manufacturer of CCO plate in the USA, you can depend on the results you get from JADCO.
Most steel distributors buy foreign CCO which has little carbide content, and even less quality control.

To make certain we deliver the longest lasting materials to our customers, JADCO has created our own clad machines. This gives us total control over every aspect of making our industry leading Chromeweld overlay plate.
You shouldn’t consider the CHROMEWELD™ family of products simply as a “One Size Fits All” wear plate. Our customers are always looking to us for continuous improvement, and rely upon JADCO to continue to create new products, to address their specific wear challenges.
This further improves your wear plate performance results by having the Research and Development for these state-of-the-art wear resistant products. Each one is already completed and proven in real world applications, before you ever install them in your equipment.
