I had a conversation recently with a long time customer about how they maintain their equipment. They dig in all types of soil from sand and gravel, to quartz to cobble.

What type of hardfacing do they use?
His answer surprised me:
We Try To Stay Away From Hardfacing As Much As We Can.”, was his immediate answer.
Their Primary Reasons For This Are:
- You can’t cut hardfacing with an oxy-fuel torch, so most field work is difficult if not impossible.
- Hardfacing requires significant labor hours to apply, keeping your equipment out of commission.
The theory is ‘dirt’ will stick between the hardfacing ridges, allowing dirt to wear against dirt, rather than against the steel.
That sounds good on paper, but it doesn’t aways work in application.
