False Wear Plate Hardness Claims
JADCO • Rich F.2024-10-10T10:45:44-04:00From the time JADCO was founded on August 8, 1980; our customers have heard countless reasons why Brand ‘T’ or Brand ‘H’, etc., wear plate is better than QT-PLUS®.
One Thing Our Customers Consistently Heard Is:
Our Steel Is So Much Harder; It Is Tough To Form.”
What they are not telling you, is their steel lacks the proper balance of alloys to make it make it both HARD AND FORMABLE.

What happened to cause this crack? This area is subject to heavy impact with every bucket loaded. This fracture was more than 36” long, located in the haul truck box shown in the next photo. Their ratios of alloys are out of proportion to each other.
This results in a steel that cracks from impact. Replacing this plate with the same steel, will result in more cracked plates and downtime.
Their steel is not actually harder as they claim.
While their lower cost may be tempting, having crack sensitive wear plate inside your equipment is another breakdown waiting to happen.

Why Is This Important?
QT-PLUS® is easy to form as long as your press brake has the tonnage required to form it.
Here is a quick rule-of-thumb to determine how much pressure is needed:
FORMING QT-PLUS® REQUIRES FOUR TIMES THE FORCE COMPARED TO MILD STEEL.
This means if your press brake can form 1.5” thick A-36 mild steel, you can only form 3/8” thick QT-PLUS® !
To determine if your equipment can do the job you need to know:
- 1. The tonnage capacity of your press brake or roller.
- 2. The width of the wear plate to be formed.
- 3. The thickness of your wear plate.
- 4. The width of your bottom die opening.
If you are not certain if your equipment is up to the task, ask your salesperson what tonnage is required to get the job done safely.

We do this all day and can help make certain your wear steel fits as it was designed.
JADCO’s QT-PLUS ® delivers greater performance IN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING WEAR APPLICATIONS than the various AR400 steel plates you have used previously.
Being able to create wear resistant steel having the same hardness through the entire thickness of the steel, demands you accurately control the alloying chemistry with precise heat treating.
Why Doesn’t Every Company Make Their Wear Plate Last As Long As JADCO QT-PLUS ®?
The quick answer is the attention to detail required at the steel mill in Pennsylvania is available to anyone. Yet most wear plate distributors choose to reduce the proper quantities and percentages of the essential alloying elements, to get a lower selling price.
When you cut back on these critical alloys, wear life drops and it is always the customer who suffers.
For over the last 44+ years JADCO has focused exclusively on delivering consistent, longer life for our customers.
