Do You Operate Like A Hostage Negotiator?
JADCO • Rich F.2025-07-03T10:49:10-04:00When most people encounter an equipment breakdown, they manage their equipment challenges like a hostage negotiator.
The first thing most people do at this time is jump into action before completely evaluating the situation.
This cycle repeats itself, from one impending disaster to the next.
This kind of thinking is NOT how you solve your wear challenges.
The real obstacle is people don’t understand how to correctly think about their problems.
They grab the same or similar material and throw it on, hoping for better results.
Look at the chute in the photo below as an example of what to look for in your own equipment.
• Stripes may help camouflage a tiger in the wild, but the visible wear stripes on this chute do not hide the fact that this wear plate was not hard all the way through. Look carefully for these types of issues in your heat treated wear steel applications.
• The darker areas are harder than the lighter areas. The lighter areas are the center of the thickness of the steel. You can see once the abrasion has worn through the hard outer surface, the material quickly eats its way into and through the softer center. This results in product loss and unplanned downtime.
• Like sand ripples on the beach, you can tell that the movement causing the wear on this chute moved from the bottom to the top. The ‘waves’ are caused because the material has now worn through into the softer center of the steel. And when the wear gets this deep, it undermines the steel as it eats away from the inside.
JADCO wear plate professionals do not look at these kinds of problems as a roadblock, but rather as opportunities for performance advancement.
What Was Our Material Recommendation For The Customer?
We suggested they install CHROMEWELD ™ 600 for the chute, rather than the generic AR450 they had been using. Chrome Carbide Overlay plate is dramatically harder than heat treated steel, as you can see in the graphic above.
And What Were Their Results?
For the past several years, they had been replacing the AR450 chutes EVERY MONTH.
By switching to CHROMEWELD ™ 600, the chutes did not require replacement for ONE YEAR.
At JADCO we are not looking for a one time sale. We want to form a long term partnership with you. Our goal is to become your Go-To-Resource for all of your wear resistant application needs.
