Extreme Wear Protection

Do You Need Extreme Wear Protection?

A long-time steel mill customer was pleased when he was only able to gets a few months from AR450 previously; and CHROMEWELD™ 600 Chrome Carbide Overlay plate delivered 2 years of wear life. It immediately set the new standard for wear resistant performance success.

Several years later, a new maintenance supervisor was searching for a new longer lasting solution. He was informed how much better this was than their prior AR steel. His response was…

“… and now I want something to last even longer.”

IMPACT ZONE
CW600 plate holds up exceptionally well in nearly all areas. The main loading & impact zone, shown here outlined in soapstone; took 2 years to wear to this point. With this difficult location, the customer wanted to maximize production time between scheduled shutdowns before having to replace it again.

In a steel mill, the Direct Reduced Iron Chute or DRI, streams recycled steel scrap into the ladle.  Not only is the location difficult to access, it is naturally the greatest wear challenge in the melt department.

To replace these chute liners, the entire system must be shut down to allow a crane and a 200-foot-high man lift to access and replace the liners. This means these wear components are only changed during a scheduled facility maintenance shut down.

The majority of their wear occurred in very specific areas. Over the years, they tested nearly every wear resistant steel available, hoping to get a handle on these difficult challenges.

To combat these severe wear issues, JADCO created CHROMEWELD™ W, our tungsten carbide overlay plate.  ‘W’ is the atomic symbol for the element Tungsten.

We manufactured ½ on ½ CHROMEWELD™ W for them to test in this worst-case location, along with a full sheet to use as patch plates for specific problem locations.

The term ½ on ½, refers to welding a ½” thick Chrome Carbide layer also containing Tungsten Carbide particles; on top of a ½” thick steel base plate. This makes the overall plate 1” thick.

The steel mill tested the CHROMWELD™ W plates in their DRI chutes, to deliver the fastest feedback. Due to the difficult location, they were not inspected until after one year in production. There was no visible wear on the CHROMWELD™ W liners, other than ‘shining up’ the surface of the CHROMWELD™ W.

Tungsten Carbide
Most companies who make a Tungsten carbide plate, simply drop the carbide particles on the surface as shown here. Once wear begins around the carbides, you immediately lose the tungsten particles.

Once The Carbides Fall Out, You Just Lost Your Wear Resistance.

JADCO Makes It Differently.


Tungsten Carbides in other producer’s CCO, sink to the bottom of the weld deposit.  This means the wear resistance of their Tungsten Carbides products cannot begin to deter wear until the deposit is nearly gone.

The steel mill discovered JADCO’s CHROMEWELD™ W, was the only product to evenly disperse the Tungsten Carbides from the top surface, all throughout the entire thickness of the overlay deposit.
