During a woodyard rebuild, QT-PLUS ® was selected as the deck plate for conveyor log chain. Using QT-PLUS ® was the ideal choice on the haul side as it features our industry leading through hardness, with impact and abrasion resistance. The load was 3-tons for every eight feet of chain, over the 154’ length of the conveyor.
For the chain return side, the project manager attempted to save money by using commodity grade AR400. His reasoning was since there were no logs, it only had to handle the 20.7 pounds per foot of chain weight.
Unfortunately, the return side wear plates had to be replaced after 4 years, as it had worn out – just from the weight of the empty chain.
The project manager’s response: “The money I tried to save, ended up costing us over $100,000 to replace the ‘inexpensive’ wear plate. Lesson learned.”
The QT-PLUS ® load side hauled 57 tons of logs over the length of the conveyor, 16 hours per day. Where their standard AR400 required replacing every 4 years, QT-PLUS ® lasted 10 years before being replaced.
Prior to removing and replacing the entire log deck, they would simply add another layer of AR400 on top of the worn out plate.
