Celebrate July 4TH Safely
JADCO • Rich F.2024-07-03T14:08:31-04:00Celebrating Independence Day usually brings excitement to many families planning backyard barbecues before watching and lighting off fireworks.
Unfortunately, every year emergency rooms treat many injuries including amputated fingers and hands from improper use of fireworks.
Too many injuries result from burns with a combination of blast injuries.
These safety guidelines will help keep your Fourth of July celebrations injury free.
1. NEVER HOLD ONTO FIREWORKS
Never hold onto a firecracker or any type of firework, especially while lighting. It could explode prematurely. I learned this lesson the hard way, becoming another statistic. Never try to relight any “dud” fireworks.
2. ONLY ADULTS SHOULD HANDLE FIREWORKS:
Although sparklers are often thought to be kid-friendly and safe, this is not always true. Those pretty sparks can reach temperatures above 2000°F, and can cause severe burns to those nearby.
3. SAFE USE & STORAGE:
Use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open area. Light on flat surface. Never light them indoors. Store unlit fireworks away from lighting area.
4. KEEP WATER NEARBY:
Have a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher nearby in case of fire or to extinguish fireworks that may not go off.
5. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE:
Light only one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.Never point fireworks in the direction of another person, animal or building.
6. NEVER USE FIREWORKS WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE:
Never use fireworks while you or others are impaired by drugs or alcohol.
7. IF INJURED, SEEK HELP IMMEDIATELY:
Should accidents or injuries occur, seek medical attention at your local emergency room.
8. REMEMBER NOT EVERYONE ENJOYS FIREWORKS:
Even though fireworks are meant to entertain us, it is not uncommon for the sounds, intense light or smells to cause distress. Those who have suffered a traumatic event from explosions, gunfire, loud noises or fire; find fireworks can trigger unpleasant memories from past events.
If you find fireworks cause distress and can be hard to manage, treatment can help.
By learning to respond to trauma reminders, rather than reacting to them, you can make a difference in your level of distress.
You can learn to turn a “trigger” that sets off an automatic reaction, into a “cue” that allows you to respond to in a way that feels safe and healthy.
