Could Your Chrome Carbide Overlay Wear Plate Use A Little Help?
JADCO • Rich F.2023-09-11T16:41:29-04:00As you approach the end of the year, naturally you try to coax every last bit of production you can from your equipment.
Before you shut down for the winter repair season, now is the time to determine if you need to replace your current wear plates. Are you perhaps thinking you can make it another season by simply touching up the major wear areas.
Does Your CCO Wear Plate Need A Little Help?
If you are using one of the CHROMEWELD ™ wear plate products, or even a generic CCO plate; you may consider repairing your clad plate. If your clad wear plate has some worn areas, rather than replacing it now; can you get through another year of production, by adding some hard facing during repair season?
Chrome Carbide Overlay (CCO) Steel: CCO steels have hardfacing welded onto a mild steel base plate. This is easily identified by seeing hardfacing weld beads on the surface of the wear plate. CCO was designed primarily to combat sliding abrasion issues. You will find most manufacturers list their clad products as tolerating little to moderate impact.
JADCO CHROMEWELD ™ product lineup features 6 different products to address your specific abrasion and impact needs.
You Can’t Weld Hardsurface Over Hardsurface
Unlike most heat treated wear steels, it is important to use the correct welding products to repair Chrome Carbide Overlay plates. Weld preparation is important for CCO repair, before you grab your welding helmet.
You cannot simply grab any other hardfacing welding wire or stick and just start welding on CCO wear plate. If you do, it is guaranteed the welding stresses caused by applying new hardfacing over your existing carbide weld deposit; will break out in chunks.
Weld Preparation
Before starting any welding procedure, you need to remove spalled and worn areas. Using a hard stone grinding wheel, make certain you have removed the surface area to be welded, leaving a clean surface. Remove any dirt, grease, rust or paint immediately before welding.
Selecting The Correct Welding Products Is Critical
You Must Use A Cushion Pass Between Your Hardfacing Layers
Similar to spreading jam between two pieces of toast, it is important to completely cover the existing weld surface with a cushion, or build up weld layer. This deposit allows the repair as a buffer deposit between the original surface to the new hardfacing weld.
Fusion ™ Universal wire is an excellent cushion product to use between hardsurface layers, providing strength and toughness. Available in wire and Universal E is the stick electrode version to use in the field when conditions or equipment limitations are not suitable for wire welding.
Fusion ™ 600 is a high chromium cast iron available in welding wire or stick form, ideal for hardsurfacing components subject to extreme abrasive wear and moderate impact. The FUSION ™ 600 deposit contains a large quantity of hard primary chromium carbides, within a tough austenitic matrix.
FUSION ™ 600 is ideal for hardfacing components experiencing wear by sand, earth and abrasives. The deposit produced is similar to CHROMEWELD™ 600 wear plate. Using special weld settings, FUSION™ 600 can even be welded out of position.
Prior to welding, be certain to preheat the areas to be repaired to 200°F. Use straight stringer beads without weaving.
This should get you through another production season, before you need to replace your wear plates with JADCO materials.
