Buy The Better Product
JADCO • Rich F.2025-11-10T20:28:19-05:00At a paper industry conference, there was a discussion of higher priced, industry leading American made products versus cheaper Chinese competitors.
“Don’t send me a better product."
This called to mind a prior sales call to a customer in one of the Northern states. This is the time of year, aggregate and mining customers schedule preventative maintenance for their various wear applications.
While on a sales call to a newer customer, the lead mechanic saw me and said,
“You have to come see what your wear plate looks like!”
This was not exactly the greeting I expected to start the visit.
He showed me an impact plate from his screen plant, with a 4” oval hole worn in the center. I knew this was the first JADCO QT-PLUS ® component he installed at the beginning of this year. I was about to ask a few questions when he blurted out, “Isn’t that great?”
Now I was confused.
Selling wear resistant steel and hardfacing products since 1993, this is the first time anyone had been excited about a worn out piece of wear plate.
He said,
“This made it the entire season, where before I would have replaced it at least four times!”
Price Is What You Pay, Value Is The Wear Life You Receive
At JADCO we start asking questions about the installation and see how we can assure this choice will be the best for their specific application.
The answers these questions uncovered:
- They don’t have a spare.
- They hoped to remove it just ahead of their 2-week outage, and send it to us to be rebuilt.
- The idea is to strip it down and rebuild it with new CHROMEWELD 600 wear plates. Then ship it back in time for the projected start-up.
At this point they can’t:
- Confirm if the current condition of the existing components allow for rebuilding.
- Here are a couple photos from six months ago, at the last inspection.
Oh, and how much will this cost, and how long will it take?
Their file drawings called out one style of wear plate. But they don’t match what is shown in the photos.
Here Is The Dilemma:
Do Exactly What The Customer Asked For, Or What They Actually Need?
Do We…
• Quote exactly what is shown on the drawing? Or what we see in the photos?
• Which version do you want? The most effective version, or the lowest cost?
• Or do you want the longest life and best performance? Frequently the price difference between the two is less than 30%.
• Which version do you want? The most effective version, or the lowest cost?
• Or do you want the longest life and best performance? Frequently the price difference between the two is less than 30%.
The purchasing manager may opt for a 30% cost difference, eliminating the better performing option due to the higher initial price.
The reliability engineer is searching for the longest lasting, most cost effective solution for this unique application.
The maintenance department expects to install it and not to have to think about it for years. They have plenty to do without another disappointing result that was promoted as, “It is just as good but cheaper than JADCO”.
Rather than instantly blurt out an answer to your initial question on cost or speed, we gather all the information and variables. Then compare that information with historical performance data and determine what is the best solution for your application.
Most people look at their Maintenance Budget as if every dollar has the same value. That is not the case.
The money you spend to repair or rebuild your industrial equipment does not have the same value.
While the paper and ink are virtually the same, the value of a hundred, fifty or twenty dollar bill is worth greater than the dollar bill. This tiny difference in the details, makes all the difference in the value you receive.
I hink almost everyone can remember a time when you bought something and quickly realized you didn’t get the results you thought you would receive. And you desperately wish you had the opportunity for a ‘do-over’.
Industrial Maintenance Has No Do-Overs
The bottom line is you didn’t get the results you had hoped for, from the money you spent.
By spending smarter, YOU make certain you‘re receiving the benefits in your investment.
JADCO’s QT-PLUS ® delivers greater performance IN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING WEAR APPLICATIONS than the various AR400 steel plates you have used previously.
Being able to create wear resistant steel having the same hardness through the entire thickness of the steel, demands you accurately control the alloying chemistry with precise heat treating.
Doesn’t Every Steel Company Make Their Wear Plate Last As Long As JADCO QT-PLUS ®?
The quick answer is No; although the attention to alloy content required at the steel mill is available to anyone. Yet most wear plate distributors choose to reduce the proper quantities and percentages of these essential alloying elements, to get a lower selling price.
When you cut back on these critical alloys, wear life drops, and it is always the customer who suffers.
For over 45 years, JADCO has focused exclusively on delivering consistent, longer life for our customers.
