One aggregate producer needed to reline an older haul truck, but tried to do it cheaply.
He said, “We’re not going to put any money into this haul truck, because we are replacing it next year. I don’t want to buy ‘the good JADCO steel’ for someone else to get the wear benefits.”
“I have plenty of old cutting edges laying around, I’ll put them in there, and it will last to the end of the season.
Then we will buy a new haul truck.”
Let’s see how this decision worked out for our frugal friend:
• Welding in cutting edges from 1” to 1.5” thick as you can see in the above photo. The various pieces formed obstructions to material flow from the front to the back. This means it took longer to dump each load = lost time and less revenue.
• With the heavy cutting edges instead of thinner flat plate, the truck was heavier. This not only reduced each load size, it reduced fuel mileage and was harder on every component in the truck, from bearings to tires.
• The jigsaw puzzle of left-over cutting edges in the truck bed, meant far more seams to weld. The end result is more install hours for the pieces of cutting edge vs. larger flat plates.
