Abrasion Resistance Explained

The two main causes of wear we combat daily are Abrasion and Impact.

The ASTM test to measure the abrasive resistance of any metal is the G-65 Test.

To Compare Any Materials, Every Variable Must Be Identical.

This standardized test measures the material weight loss from a specific metal sample, measured in grams.

Test Samples
The test samples are prepared so they are the same thickness, length and width.
Test Samples Diameter

The rubber test wheel is a specific durometer hardness. For this example, the test wheel was 8.875” in diameter. They use special test sand so the granule hardness, grain shape and size are consistent.

Rubber Test
The rubber wheel rotates an exact number of revolutions. The read-out shows the number of lineal feet. The weight in pounds shown in the above photo is the pressure of the wheel against the steel test sample.
Sand Drop

The test sand drops above the location where the rubber wheel contacts the test material, shown above with the red arrow. The sand is squeezed between the steel and the wheel.

 

The Metal Samples Are Weighed Before And After The Test. The Weight Loss Is Measured In Grams.

Here you can see the results of the test on a piece of 4140, which is not a wear resistant steel.

How Do JADCO Products Compare For Abrasion Resistance?

Abrasion Resistance

The Abrasion Life Increase scale is an accurate representation of wear life for these JADCO products. On the products shown with two names, the first name is a plate and the second name is hardfacing welding alloy wire.

The CW names such as CW600 are the Chromeweld ™ family of Chrome Carbide Overlay plates. The Fusion product line are the welding alloys.
